@me: Understanding Personal Identity Online

This project looked at how young adults are navigating the world of social media. The profiles are based around 4 interviews, with the questions centering around how people are integrating social media into their lives and how identity is shaped around social media through this constant connection. The questions were framed through the communication theory of identity, with the assumption that social media would have impact individuals’ identities by altering the way in which they connect with others. While interviewing I was looking to see which, if any, specific social media “rules” that interviewees felt obligated to follow, and how they assigned meaning to their online profiles in relation to their identity. This project is an interactive collage, with key moments from each interview appearing as you scroll through their collection of online material.
